Questions

Pro Care FAQ

Still unsure? Call us at (902) 562-1031.

What does "per head" mean?

A head is each indoor unit on your walls or ceiling. A home with three indoor units has three heads, so Pro Care is $90.

When does my coverage start?

The same day as your cleaning, once each head passes inspection.

What if a head fails the inspection?

We'll explain what's wrong and quote the repair. You aren't charged the $30 for that head until it's repaired and passes.

Are parts and refrigerant included?

No. Pro Care covers labour. Parts and refrigerant are charged if they're needed.

How many service visits are covered?

Labour on up to three service visits per home each year.

How do I stay covered next year?

Keep your next yearly cleaning booked. We set it for the same date next year, with a 30-day window to move it.

Is my heat pump covered if another company cleaned it?

Only heat pumps we clean and inspect ourselves are covered. Book a cleaning with us and add Pro Care to get started.

Does it cover other equipment?

Not right now. Pro Care is for heat pumps only. You do get a free dryer vent, ductwork and water tank check on cleaning day.

Add Pro Care to your next cleaning.

$30 per head. Labour covered on up to 3 visits a year.

The heat pumps we install

Novair and Hisense, picked for Nova Scotia weather

We install Novair and Hisense cold-climate heat pumps. Your free in-home estimate covers which model and size fits your home.

NovairHisense

Built for cold snaps

These units keep heating well below anything Sydney or Halifax normally sees, so your heat pump carries the winter instead of the baseboards or oil.

Made for damp, freeze-thaw winters

A heated base pan and compressor heater cut down ice build-up and help the unit defrost, which matters more in our wet cold than in dry cold.

Ready for salt air

The Novair Hyper Heat line was tested for 5,000 hours in a salt spray chamber, a real plus on the coast.

Comfortable in humid summers

Cooling and dehumidifying from the same unit.

Rebates and lower power costs

Efficient cold-climate models are the ones rebate programs are built around. We’re an Efficiency Nova Scotia and Nova Scotia Power partner, so we’ll help you check what you qualify for.

Is it right for you?

Who a heat pump suits

You heat with oil

Tired of oil bills and filling the tank? A heat pump can take over most of your heating.

You have electric baseboards

Baseboards make heat from power. A heat pump moves heat instead, so you get more heat from the same electricity.

You have no air conditioning

The same unit cools and dehumidifies in summer, so one install covers both seasons.

Your current heat pump is tired

If it struggles in the cold or is past its best, a new cold-climate model is a big step up.

Good to know

Common questions

Will it heat my whole house?

It depends on your layout. One head heats an open area well, and closed-off rooms may need their own. We sort that out at your estimate.

Do I keep my old heating?

Most people keep it as backup for the coldest nights and let the heat pump do most of the work.

How often should it be cleaned?

Once a year keeps it running efficiently and helps catch small problems early.

Rheem and Novair water tanks

Hot water you don’t have to think about

We install Rheem and Novair tanks, in standard electric and hybrid heat pump models. Here’s why they’re a good pick, and who they suit.

RheemNovair

Brands we stand behind

Rheem and Novair are the two brands we choose to install and service.

Hybrid tanks use far less power

A hybrid tank uses a heat pump to heat the water, so it uses much less electricity than a standard electric tank.

Electric tanks keep it simple

A standard electric tank costs less up front and fits almost any home.

Sized and installed properly

We size the tank for your household, install it tidily and give you a clear price before we start.

Is it time?

Who should get one

Your tank is getting old

If it’s leaking, rusting or well past ten years, replace it before it lets go.

You run out of hot water

A tank sized for your household fixes cold showers.

You want lower power bills

A hybrid suits homes with a basement or utility room and some open space around the tank.

You’re building or renovating

The easiest time to put in the right tank is while the work is already under way.

Closed-cell spray foam

The insulation that seals, blocks moisture and adds strength.

We mostly use closed-cell spray foam, like Elastochem's Insulthane® Extreme, made in Canada. It's sprayed on as a liquid, expands to fill every gap and crack, and cures into a dense, rigid layer. One application insulates, air seals and acts as a vapour barrier.

R-7per inch. One of the highest of any insulation.
AirtightStops drafts and air leaks where it's sprayed.
Up to 3×stronger walls. Racking strength up to 300% higher in NAHB testing.
Made in Canada100% Canadian-owned manufacturer.
Keeps moisture outWorks as a vapour control layer and absorbs very little water, which helps prevent mould and mildew.
Lower heating billsSealing air leaks and adding high R-value keeps the heat in. Elastochem says up to 40% savings on heating and cooling.
Tested and certifiedCCMC listed, GREENGUARD Gold certified for low emissions, and evaluated as part of a radon barrier system.
Lower-impact formulaMade with a low global-warming (HFO) blowing agent instead of older, higher-impact chemicals.

Closed-cell vs open-cell foam

What we mostly use

Closed-cell foam

Dense, strong and moisture-resistant.

  • FeelDense and rigid
  • R-valueAbout double per inch
  • MoistureActs as a vapour barrier and resists water
  • StrengthAdds strength to walls and roofs
  • Best forBasements, rim joists, exterior walls, anywhere moisture is a concern
VS

Open-cell foam

Lighter and cheaper, but does less.

  • FeelSoft and spongy
  • R-valueLower per inch
  • MoistureLets moisture vapour through
  • StrengthNo added strength
  • Best forInterior walls and sound control

New construction & renovations

Building or renovating? Spray foam it before the drywall goes up.

Open walls are the best time to insulate. We work with homeowners, builders and contractors on new homes, additions, garages and gut renos, so the building is sealed tight from day one.

How a spray foam job goes

1

Free assessment

We look at the space, recommend the right thickness and give you a clear price. We'll also help you check rebates.

2

Prep and protect

We cover and mask the area so the foam only goes where it should.

3

Spray and seal

The foam expands into every gap and crack and cures into a solid layer.

4

Clean up

We clean up. The space is ready to use again 24 hours after spraying.

Is closed-cell spray foam worth it?

It costs more than batts up front, but it insulates, air seals and blocks moisture in one step, and keeps working for the life of the building. For basements and older homes with drafts, it's usually the best upgrade you can make.

Can I stay home while you spray?

Everyone, including pets, needs to stay out of the home for 24 hours while we spray and the foam cures. After that, you're good to move back in.

Will spray foam get me a rebate?

Insulation upgrades can qualify for Efficiency Nova Scotia rebates when you book a Home Energy Assessment before the work. See rebates →

Does it help with basement dampness?

Closed-cell foam acts as a vapour barrier and absorbs very little water, so it helps keep basement walls drier and cuts down on mould and musty smells. Active leaks should be fixed first.

Do you do blown-in insulation too?

Yes. Blown-in is often the best fit for topping up attics. Get a blown-in quote →

Why treat your roof

That green and black on your roof isn't just dirt.

Moss, algae and lichen hold moisture against your shingles. Over time that can lift shingles, loosen the protective granules and shorten the life of your roof.

Signs your roof could use it

Black streaksDark stains running down the shingles, usually algae.
Green mossFuzzy clumps, often on the shady, north-facing side.
Lichen spotsCrusty grey-green patches stuck to the shingles.
Roof looks older than it isFaded, patchy colour compared to when it was new.

How Air Nano works

1

We inspect your roof

We check the growth, the shingles and any problem areas, and give you a clear price.

2

We clean it off

Moss, algae, lichen and black streaks are treated and cleared from the shingles.

3

We protect it

The Air Nano treatment helps protect your shingles and slow the growth from coming back.

The protection

Cleaning makes it look new. The protection keeps it that way.

After we clean your roof, the Air Nano treatment goes on to protect the shingles. It's what makes the difference between a roof that looks good for a season and one that stays cleaner, longer.

UntreatedWater soaks in and sits on the shingles, giving moss and algae a place to grow.
Air Nano protectedWater beads up and runs off, so the roof dries faster and growth has a harder time taking hold.

Makes your roof last longer

Get more years out of the roof you already have.

A new roof is one of the biggest bills a homeowner faces. Moss and algae hold moisture against your shingles and wear them out early. Clearing the growth and protecting the shingles helps your roof go the distance, so you can put off that replacement.
